The Glad River

Simply this is one of the most meaningful books of my lifeI was first introduced to this book more than ten years ago. I have read it again almost annually. Campbell, one of the best storytellers of our time, with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek and his words planted deep within your soul, brings you along with Doops on his journey. A journey with destinations in the midst of search, water, baptism and life. A journey deeper into your faith and soul than you will first expect. I would strongly suggest reading Campbell's "Cecila's Sin" upon completion of "The Glad River."
Just a plain ole' good storyFirst and foremost, Will Campbell presents the reader with a simple, wonderful story of three men and their interactions with one another. If you allow it, The Glad River will begin to show its many layers and expose themes the casual reader may not have expected to find within the current setting. The search for a "real baptist" by the main character, Doops Momber, allows the reader to define his or her own theological views of what a real Christian may be, and to define (and find) oneself as Doops does.
If the glimpes at Doops' book make you curious for more, I highly recommend Wil Campbell's novella Cecelia's Sin which may offer some insight to the themes of the Glad River. In any case, Cecelia's Sin makes a wonderful companion book.

A "Letters" Book Plus A Lot MoreThe author did a lot of research on the references in Charles Reed's letters. And instead of putting the notes at the end of the book where few read them, the notes are in the margins. It really added to the understanding of what Reed was writing home about. The author also incorporates the drawings from Reed which further adds to the book. Also incorporated are Reed's diary entries. The overall package made this an outstanding and enjoyable read. This book should be the model for all future books of this type.

Always Looking For HerBethany Campbell is such a mermaid, always appearing and disappearing and coming up in another place, and always kind of teasing you. I read all I can find by her because she is not predictable.
Great romantic suspensePrivate Detective Corbett calls his friend Hawkshaw to ask a favor. An anonymous assailant is stalking Corbett's client and the signs seem to indicate the individual is about to explode, placing Kate Kanady and her young son Charlie in grave danger. Corbett wants Hawkshaw to hide the widow and her child until the danger passes. Reluctantly, Hawkshaw agrees because he owes Corbett for saving his life during their Secret Service days together.
Hawkshaw meets Kate and Charlie at the Key West Airport. He then drives them to his isolated home at Cobin Keys. A frightened but brave Kate knows this is a temporary haven until she can resettle elsewhere. However, Charlie and Hawkshaw immediately become pals as the youngster worships the older person as if he was his father. Kate begins to fall in love with her recalcitrant host as she watches his patience with Charlie. Still, he wants to reconcile with his ex-wife and Kate has to deal with a stalker and the future of her child.
Readers rightfully hold Bethany Campbell in high esteem for her tremendous romantic suspense dramas. Her latest entry into the sub-genre, THE GUARDIAN, strengthens her standing even as it appears to be another best seller. The story line is filled with stratospheric levels of suspense as Ms. Campbell manages to cleverly place her heroine in a soup stirred by a stalker seemingly of mythological proportions. The blossoming of the love between the lead protagonists feels warm even as both have their doubts. Finally, the wonderful relationship between the two males adds depth because Charlie's attention deficit disorder seem trifle to Hawkshaw. This story validates the belief that Ms. Campbell has become synonymous with the best in romantic suspense.

The Horse's MouthAn excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about the beliefs and values of Highlanders. The book is a collection of songs in Gaelic with good translations and some tunes. There are historical notes and a short biography for each poet. The songs,all contempory, deal with the Rebellion of 1745; the songs of Alexander MacDonald in particular show the progress of rebellion; his early poems were meant to stir up support for the rising and the later ones to keep up the courage of those involved. There are songs in praise of the tartan plaid, of the Highland clans and 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. A great book for the serious academic as well as the romance novelist or Celtic musician.
The best and only work of its type!a Charadean (Friends); For those with the Gaelic, native speakers or learners, or those merely interested in Gaelic music and history, this book serves as a wealth of information. Not only did the late, great Dr. Campbell put forth a magnificent volume of poetry, but an extremely important and generally overlooked primary source for those interested in the Jacobite period in general and the '45 in particular. For only here can be found the ideas and beliefs of the most important people in the Jacobite struggle - the Gaelic people themselves. Regardless of one's political viewpoint, it must be recognized that it is what the contemporary Gaels themselves thought and felt that is central to an understanding of why these people rose not once, but four times in sixty years, in an effort to restore the dynasty they viewed as the only rightful heirs to the throne. In these days of "debunking" historical revisionism, much of it generated by Whig (and latterly) Marxist/Leveller agendas, it is both interesting and important to see what the Loyal Clans of the Great Glen felt about the Cause.

Essential for any serious researcherI recommend this book for anyone interested in researching the origins of the Campbell Clan. It is a treasure trove of information.
A History of Clan Campbell Vol.1Alastair Campbell of Airds has made the history of the Campbell Clan a thoroughly readable mixture of fact and conjecture. A particularly interesting feature, in my opinion, is the family tree which begins with God and includes Adam, Constantine and King Arthur. Volume 1 covers the clan's origins in about 1263 through the Battle of Flodden in 1513 where many of the Campbell chiefs and their men died alongside their king, James IV. This is an outstanding reference book, a "must read" for anyone interested in Scottish history, and should be in all Campbell libraries. I look forward to Volume 2, to be published in 2002.

Thoroughbred books are so great. This is no exception!!If you do eventing\jumping and have always dreamed about THAT PERFECT HORSE, this is the book for you, as well as all the other Christina books out there! I love jumping, so I picked this book up right away! I'm holding it as I write! It is so exciting and actually sometimes gripping. It all starts when Christina finds Sterling Dream, a racing dapple gray mare, who refuses to race. Then Christina finds her true talent--jumping! But not before the cruel groom abuses the poor mare. I won't give away the ending, but I'll say it is very shocking and surprising in a good way!
GOOD BOOK ALERT!This book is SO good! I couldn't put it down! I liked itbecause it explains how Christina got Sterling. I loved because itteaches to do what you believe is right. I'm glad that Christina gotwhat she always had wanted, a dapple gray mare for eventing! I think Christina was the right person for Sterling because she treated her right and she could see Sterling's real talent, eventing. Well, I really liked this book and if you like horses and like to read, read A Horse Of Her Dreams!

Walk With MeTo change someone's mind or life, there is the head-butting way and the "walk with me" way, and Dr. O'Brien takes the latter. His stories all contain something we are familiar with, jog a memory we had lost-- and then take us someplace maybe we didn't expect to go today. Take them as funny stories or parables, but either way you will find yourself retelling them. The best use for this book: Read it on a porch on a warm evening, a fan slowly rotating overhead, then leave it gently on the bedstand of someone you love.
Delightful and thoughtful collection of short storiesRandall O'Brien is a pastor, a college professor, and an exceptionally gifted communicator. In this book he displays a remarkable ability to find the teaching moment in the events of everyday life. The book is collection of stories in which O'Brien calls upon events in his own pilgrimage to become storytellers for the Gospel. The book is full of richness and warmth, southern grace and uncommon insight. The short story nature of the book makes it ideal for occasional reading (i.e. a chapter before bedtime), since there are no plot elements which must be maintained from chapter to chapter. It is a fun book, and I'll bet you won't be able to read it without at least one giggle, one tear, and one moment of, "I have to tell so-and-so about this."

Have a spare aroundI have been trying to get my 18 month old son interested in books. Then this book came along and he can't get enough of it. He wants me to read it over and over......and if I don't, he flips through it himself. It makes him laugh so hard at the end. He loves swatting at the alligator. I have to hide it from him in fear that he will ruin it and be terribly sad. So, I plan on getting the same book just for back-up. Plus, my 3 1/2 yr old son knows all the words to the book and pretends to read it to my younger son. It is too cute.
a great book for little minds and fingers...i bought this book for a friend's child who was one, and i have to say it went over so big i had to run out and find one for my own bunch. it's fun, it's touchy-feely and it's interactive and educational especially for the 1-3 age range. the kids love the bit with the crocodile at the end - parents, if you buy this, be mentally prepared to read it over and over until you're blue in the face...
